Should you replace radiators with underfloor heating?Michael Martin
If you’re thinking about replacing traditional radiators with underfloor heating in one room or throughout your home, you probably have a few questions such as, how energy efficient is it? how can it be installed? what are the running costs?
Over the many years our team at North Gas have been installing underfloor heating, we often get asked these questions which we have answered further below.
Why choose underfloor heating?
Whether you are looking for more freedom in the placement of furniture and to free up space or simply require a better way to control the heating throughout your home, underfloor heating is a cost-effective and flexible heating solution when compared to traditional radiators.
Underfloor heating systems also provide a safer environment for children and pets, with the floor surface not needing to exceed more than 29°C when compared to traditional radiators that can reach up to a staggering and sometimes dangerous 80°C.
Another popular benefit of underfloor heating, when used throughout several rooms, is the ability to control the temperature in each room through an underfloor control system. Because all rooms within a property can have their own heat up, heat down and heat loss characteristics, a thermostatic control system is installed as standard for all North Gas underfloor heating customers. This gives you greater control of which rooms you wish to heat, when and by what temperature.
What type of flooring is best for underfloor heating?
Underfloor heating can work with any floor type including, tiles wood or carpet.
How efficient is underfloor heating?
One of the most popular questions asked by our customers with regards to underfloor heating is “how efficient is it when compared to standard radiators?”
The answer ultimately depends on the way you currently heat your home and the ways in which you are looking to improve efficiency, i.e by lowering fuel costs or heating rooms quicker.
What are the running costs of underfloor heating?
Unlike conventional central heating systems, underfloor heating circulates warm water through flexible pipes to provide an energy efficient solution to home heating. Heat rises evenly through the floor providing all round even heat from floor to ceiling.
The fact that the heat from underfloor heating systems is distributed evenly throughout a room means that the system can operate at a lower temperature compared to wall hung radiators which need to be operated at a higher temperature to compensate for the uneven heat distribution.
Because the operating temperature of underfloor heating is much lower compared to traditional radiators, this requires less energy from your boiler, thus lowering your heating bills.
The majority of North Gas customers have reported up to a 20% saving on annual fuel bills when switching to underfloor heating.
How do you install underfloor heating?
Underfloor heating works by circulating warm water throughout a network of pipes throughout the floor gentling heating the room from the floor up. Underfloor heating systems see water pumped through pipes that are laid on the subfloor under the top surface of the floor.
Whilst underfloor heating installation by the DIY enthusiast, we would always recommend using a reputable company who can provide not only a professional installation but provide competent advice on the most suitable options for your home.
